My review of Rachael Ray’s “Nutrish Dish” brand dog food

So many pet foods out there.. ! aisles and aisles of them, all claiming to be the very best, highest quality or made with the freshest ingredients blessed by mother nature herself, etc etc. I remember when I was a little girl we fed our dog Purina Puppy chow as a puppy (the kibbles with the powdered stuff on it that turned into a creamy substance when water was added)  and then Purina Dog chow as an adult/senior.  There were no breed specifics, special needs, ‘hormone free, additive free, all natural, free range, soy free/wheat free/ choices out there.   A few years later  while watching Price is right one day I saw a commercial for ‘cycle’ brand dog foods. Cycle one, cycle two, cycle three. It was pretty much laid out in front of you. Feed your dog this.. and it will eat.

Everything was so simple back then…

but then came greedy corporations that thought making pet food (AND human food for that matter, but that’s another rant!) was too expensive for their bottom line so they cheapened it, started adding fillers, fake colors, fake flavors and crap that has now become what we call our food today. Working in the veterinary field as long as I have, I have witnessed hundreds of cases of doggy diets done wrong. Your average consumer will judge a pet food by how it is displayed on the container. “Fresh garden greens, carrots, peas, potatoes and chicken” Wow! perfect! it all sounds fine and good until you come home from work that night to find “Fido” has vomited on your carpet and those ‘fresh garden carrots’ have left a bright orange stain that is very unbecoming of a fresh carrot. What I’ve noticed is usually it’s the prettiest bags that hold the biggest lies when it comes to picking out a pet food. One brand which will remain nameless looks amazing on display, but it’s all for show.  The majority of allergy cases we have seen have been related to feeding that brand of pet food.   Dogs will start having recurring ear infections and skin issues, wake their owners up in the middle of the night licking and chewing on their feet and butts.   Anal gland issues, you name it!  That’s what you get when you eat stuff that doesn’t belong inside your belly… your body starts to revolt!   It’s not the pet owner’s fault at all,  it’s false look of the food and the bells and whistles in its advertising that makes them think they are making an amazing choice for their furbaby.

Influenster once again offered to send me a product to test, and this time it was for my dogs.    A new food that was debuting to the public in March.  Rachael Ray’s Nutrish/Dish with Chicken and Vegetables.

My dogs were thrilled at the opportunity to eat!  No, really!   Usually when I feed them I have to put their bowls at opposite ends of the room.  Otherwise Rebel will gobble up a mouthful of his food then run over to Daisy’s bowl and do the same.. running back and forth until both bowls worth of food are packed tightly in his mouth like a hamster.  He will then attempt to chew and swallow what is in his mouth like a doggy version of ‘chubby bunny’ that often ends up with him coughing out whole pieces of kibble and me chasing him around trying to make sure he doesn’t choke himself to death.    I did an ‘unboxing’ video for Influenster and it turned into a double feature of unboxing and taste test.  Mainly because once I opened the bag the dogs were REALLY interested in what I had.   The first thing I noticed in the bag was dried veggies.   Carrot slices, shriveled up dried peas and little dice shaped dried potato bits.  Then there were chicken bits with kibble.   I divvied out a bit of each piece and let my dogs check it out.   Both were enthralled in eating the food.   Not gobbling up and swallowing as fast as possible but rather enjoying each bite.  Their noses remained in their bowls (THEIR bowls,  Rebel wasn’t doing his usual running back and forth routine) until almost each bite was gone.    The only thing they had trouble with was the rather large carrot slices.  I tried to break them into smaller bits but resorted to just soaking them in a tiny bit of water to soften them.. then they were free game to devour! Overall I really like this food for my pups.  They really took to it and it is very apparent that Rachael Ray formulated this food with the pet’s health in mind.   It’s not just a ‘pretty’ food but rather a REAL food.    Am I going to switch my dogs over to this when it officially hits the shelves?   You bet!

Another reason now why I loves me some Rachael Ray.. 😉

Thank you Influenster and Thank you Rachael Ray!  ❤

Since I belong to Influenster,  I get the occasional opportunity to try out products for free in exchange for my opinion.  Recently I was sent the SUNSHINE voxbox which had goodies from snacks to hair care products to nail polish.  One of the things I was sent was a bottle of infusium23 hair smoother.    Back in the day I used to buy a particular Infusium product (I think it was the leave in treatment) to help my way way overcolored hair. (I used to bleach my hair the color of clear… )  it was the consistency of water and only really had a smell to it to let you know it was anything but.   Honestly, I wasn’t impressed at all.    So here’s this new product staring me in the face when I opened my sunshine voxbox.  A hair smoother/defrizzer with avocado and olive oil.     Just the ingredients mentioned on the bottle alone makes it sound like it’s a thick and greasy product.  Bleh.     Still… I tried it.

This is normally how my hair is living in Missouri.   The water is hard and the weather is humid.  Unless I spend a lot of time on my hair applying product and use my straightener I leave my house looking like a  poodle.

11951920_10153529524976745_8547689234723188355_n 11949318_10153529526986745_2328517970185507939_n

It’s miserable since my hair used to be easily manageable .  😦    One morning after wetting my hair down for my morning ritual I applied a small amount of the Infusium23 to my hair.    It smelled nice, unlike the watery stuff that I once used by the same company.     I ran my fingers through my hair evenly distributing the cream up and down my hair until it was well blended.   My hands didn’t feel greasy from it which was nice and a bit surprising.    Afterwards I followed up with a little bit of straightening just to make sure it would hold for the whole day.    Even before I used my straightener though,  my hair looked a lot less poufed  and may have been good just leaving the house that way.

Well, I’m proud to report that Infusium redeemed themselves to me by offering me to try this product.  They have definitely upped their game when it comes to keeping hair controlled and frizz free.    Now I can go to work not feeling like a poodle!  😀

Would I consider buying this product again someday?  That is very likely!   I like how easy it is to use and you don’t have to use gobs and gobs of it in order to work, especially with semi thick hair.  I’m all about simple rituals before leaving the house for work first thing in the morning… and this was a very simple ritual that only took me a few minutes.

Danke,  Influenster!  and  Infusium23!   You’ve redeemed yourself in my eyes!  🙂

My Dove 48 hour experience

Ah!  What a perfect thing for me to test this time of year!    Missouri summers can be HOT, HUMID and MISERABLE!

You get in your car and crank up the AC as high as it can go,  and you have to use your windshield wipers to clear your windows of the thick haze of moisture.

Just walking from my car into my workplace I am dripping with sweat hoping that the AC will be working (sometimes it isn’t)    So…. with that being said putting this Dove deodorant isn’t going to be easy.   I have a lot of opportunity to offend people if this doesn’t work since my job involves interacting with people all day long.

The first day I applied it right after my morning shower.    It felt weird not putting something underneath my arms that didn’t feel like it was going to last.   Usually my deodorant of choice has had that ‘spackle’ feeling  (the more you put underneath there,  the longer it will work… or maybe that was just a mental thing?)  I go into work by 7am so it’s not blistering hot yet,  but…. the building is so old that if a thunderstorm happens to knock out the thermostat then by the time you enter the building you are already dealing with a steamy uncomfortable workplace.   Add in a slew of panting patients coming in and out all day for their appointments, then by noon you have a sauna that smells of dog breath.   So,  halfway through the day I felt the sweat dripping down my back but even though I was used to having that ‘spackle’ feeling of when I would apply my usual gel deodorant my arms still smelled and felt surprisingly dry.   By the time I got home and peeled my uniform off of my body,  I didn’t smell like  I had run a 5k.  In fact the light scent of cucumber and melon still was present from the application of the deodorant that morning.   Needless to say I was impressed!
The next day started off almost the same way,  except I needed to do more errands when I got off work.  So that meant a lot more walking to my car through the humidity and into different places.    Still at the end of the day I felt fresh and not stinky.   I even picked up another stick of Dove cucumber and melon to have in my travel suitcase 🙂   Overall I was pleased with the results.    The main thing I learned from his experience is that more necessarily isn’t better… and I won’t be putting on layers of gel deodorant ever again.  I appreciate influenster for giving me opportunity to try out this Dove product so I could learn something about it.   It definitely made me switch for good!

Another review blog from Influenster! This time it’s Calvin Klein Reveal men!

Influenster gave me another opportunity to try out something I’ve always wanted to try.   Well,  actually it’s for my husband but it’s also for me 😉   A little over a month ago I was sent a questionnaire about colognes.   What ones have I tried, what ones would I be interested in trying in exchange for my opinion, etc.  I guess I answered the correct answers because shortly after that I was informed that I qualified for the Calvin Klein REVEAL for men  Voxbox!    Yay!    Voxboxes come in all sizes,  this one only held one sample but it was of a cologne that I have always wanted to smell.    My husband has always been kind of a ‘put on whatever smells good at the time’ kinda guy while I am VERY scent orientated.  ( One of the first gifts I bought for him when we first met was a bottle of Curve)   I love putting on things that smell sweet and fruity (Juicy Couture is my absolute favorite)  but I have a small collection of different choices if the mood hits me differently on any given day, and I do make sure I leave the house every morning smelling like one of them.  It’s a ritual I suppose.  For my husband,  it’s always been Curve or Cool Water by Davidoff but sadly, he’s  the complete opposite of me when it comes to fragrance swag.  In our household  I’M the cologne police when he has an important function at work that he has to dress up for and I make sure he leaves smelling just as nummy as he looks.   Sometimes I can tell he just gets frustrated, rolls his eyes and walks away… but I’ll sneak in a spritz on his back while he’s walking away so I still win 🙂   He’ll thank me someday when someone compliments him.

I’m not sure exactly what it is in Curve/Cool Water that I really love to smell on a man, even if I’m out in public walking around I’ll catch a whiff of someone wearing it nearby.      It’s strong and spicy but also clean smelling and exotically sweet.   So, with all that said I was curious on how Calvin Klein would measure up to my favorites.   I definitely wasn’t disappointed!

The package arrived with a little sample of Reveal in a pump spray bottle (never seen one so small before, so cute!) and a little leather card holder (upper right in the picture)   A little extra ‘thank you’ from them for trying out their product.   When I opened it I snuck a sniff and knew I was going to like it.  It has all the components that makes up the scent that I LOVE.   It’s like  a mix of sweet and spice with  a sandalwood overtone.    The next day my husband had a meeting at work that he had to attend in suit and tie so I made sure he wore it.  It absolutely smelled delicious on him,  and it was just as yummy and fragrant after his long work day .    He did say that he received a few comments (not harassingly  of course) and he made sure to tell them it was Calvin Klein Reveal.   As a whole, I love this and would definitely consider this as a future gift for him the next time I proudly don my scent police badge 🙂

Thank you again,  Influenster for allowing me to test out another product.   Doing this is so much fun!

**as a member I received these products complimentary from Influenster for testing purposes. the opinions expressed above are mine**

Hello from the week that would not end..

Oh my god I’m so exhausted!   I don’t know if it’s I’m not sleeping well or working too hard but I come home dragging.   Even too tired to eat most nights  (yum,  sleep for dinner!)   my mind has been wanting to blog but the rest of me just wants to lay in a comatose state until morning.    Then, at 3am when the doxies wake me up for their morning potty it’s time to start the day over again.   Wash, rinse, repeat..         at least I’m off on Friday.  I really need it!   Going to hopefully catch up on a lot of things I’ve been neglecting.

I was accepted for another voxbox!    Either today or tomorrow I should be getting one that has Calvin Klein products inside.   How cool is that?  I had so much fun with the last one it’s cool that they really do monitor what their members do and give them opportunities to do other ones.   One of my other friends was just notified she was getting one soon, I think a different one though.. they do several a month from what I have seen.    They always send you the tracking number on the box that is arriving so you can see where it is.  Right now mine is in Illinois.   Hurry up voxbox!

My weight loss is doing wonderful!   Went to the doctor today for a new bout of hip pain that reared its ugly head about a week and a half ago.   Turns out I either strained or partially tore my  Sartorius muscle most likely swinging my leg over to get out of bed one of these mornings when I’m half asleep and needing to take the pups out to pee.  I absolutely love my doctor,  not only is he thorough and listens to his patients’ concerns instead of just going all textbook with zero bedside manner… he takes the time to listen and educate you about what’s going on with you.   For instance, I had no idea that  the word ‘Sartorius’ comes from  early 18th century: modern Latin, from Latin sartor ‘tailor’ (because the muscle is used when adopting a cross-legged position, earlier associated with a tailor’s sewing posture).   Pretty cool although the injury itself hurts like hell.     So, now I get to figure out a different way to get out of bed.    I was given a steroid shot which helped a lot but it’s only temporary if I don’t let it heal.     I’m half tempted to bring my yoga ball back to work to use that as my desk ‘chair’.    That works wonderful in strengthening the tummy and thigh muscles.    My co worker’s rolled over a staple and deflated so I felt weird being the only one up front sitting on a big blue yoga ball so I took it home, but I may bring it back.  For those who have never tried exercises on one, I highly recommend trying it!   It keeps you constantly aware and in check with your posture and you can really feel the effects after using it for a period of time.

sigh,  so… what to post as a picture of the day?     While I don’t have anything vintage tonight to share, I do have another collection that I was thinking about bringing out since a lot of time and care was taken in these photos.  When I lived overseas I managed a facebook page for the veterinary clinic I was working for at the time.   A couple co workers and I agreed that posting pictures of their pets’ really helps boost morale and bring a good name back to the reputation of the military vet clinic.    Sadly they generally have a rep of being employed and ran by people who could care less about animals.  So many times we’d get snapped at with a ‘well I know YOU don’t care if my dog lives or dies!”    I can proudly say that while I was there my team really turned that public opinion completely around. (but then I left, and my team slowly left too and now the place is a hole once again)   Long story short though,  when I left the facebook page I had created lay dormant then was deleted altogether.    The public was told by the incompetent staff that remained that the page was never run by an employee but rather an imposter.   Pssh… whatever.   I know the truth and those that matter know the truth too.   The rest of them can suck it.

So I have lots of pictures saved from my albums that were on there of our communities’ beautiful furbabies.    Until I can get more old pictures scanned here are some cute animals.   Keep in mind that they are at the VET while these pictures are taken and either just got their vaccinations, a thermometer up their booties or had a microchip implanted (to name a few)   aside from all that, look how happy they are!    That’s how much we rocked the block when I was in charge,   Enjoy the ‘Puparazzi’ pictures and will try to write more tomorrow,  Hooah!

Living in a world with no mirrors

I belong to Influenster where they send out products to try for free in exchange for my opinions and endorsement.  So far I’ve had fun doing it as I’ve gotten some cool stuff.   You also go to their site and do certain tasks in order to gain ‘badges’ which qualify you for possibly being picked to get more free stuff to try.   It’s a never ending loop,  but it’s been fun!

One of the tasks I was given was to go to youtube and watch a video by the company that makes the product “No7 Protect & Perfect ADVANCED Serums”.   I had never heard of this before I received it in my voxbox so I got to try it without hearing anything about it,  good or bad.    It’s a nice product,  although I wish they had sent a little bit more in order for me to form a more accurate opinion about it.    The amount I received is less than what you get in a packet of shampoo sample.   I’m not saying they should hang out full sized bottles for samples but maybe a week or so in order to see if it actually does make a difference in your skin.  With that being said I’m more than willing to purchase a bottle on my own,  but just not right away.    When I do though, I’ll share the experience 🙂  But anyway..
like I was saying, one of the tasks was to watch the video which is here,  it shows 8 women trying the product over a period of 4 weeks and then revealing the difference as they look at themselves in the mirror for the first time…  after 4 weeks!      Yep, no mirrors for 4 weeks!   Would you be able to do that?     Several years ago there was a tv show called “The Swan”.    It was a reality show that women agreed to undergo extreme plastic surgery and other cosmetic reconstructive procedures as well as drastic weight loss and vigorous exercise regimens in order to compete to be the contestant that shows the most change when it comes time to reveal yourself in the mirror.   These women were placed in an environment with no mirrors anywhere.. no possibility of even catching a glimpse of what you may look like anywhere.   Those that were caught with mirrors were immediately disqualified.   On the results show they had each contestant walk up to a curtain covered mirror and filmed their reaction as they see themselves for the first time in weeks.  I just looked up on youtube for a video of the show and came across this.   Bear in mind even this where are they now video is years old so who knows where these girls are today.   I just always thought the fact that they went through such altering procedures and were not allowed to look at their reflection was cruel.  I don’t think I could do it, even if they got free lipo and cosmetic surgeries.   I would have probably snapped a week in,  probably less.    Would you live in a world without mirrors by choice?   I do see some pros living that way,  but I don’t think I could get past the cons!

Frosty Voxbox review in its entirety! (edited)

A couple weeks ago I got a box of free goodies delivered to me.   Around November I signed up for Influenster which is a large community of people who offer their time to test and review products in exchange for receiving the products for free.  I had a fellow military wife friend who told me about this and she had gotten to a pretty high level.   She was once sent a camera.    Since I love to write,  I wanted to try this out for myself.      Well, I was qualified for the first box that came available shortly after joining.    I know I posted this picture before,  but for the sake of this entire box review I will do it again.   Behold!   The Frostyvoxbox!

My Voxbox!

My Voxbox!

The mailman had just put the box on my doorstep and didn’t ring our doorbell or anything,  so it was a REAL surprise to open my front door to let our two dachshund puppies out to potty and see this bright red box sitting on my porch.  Now, fair warning.. I’ve never been a salesperson who sold Avon, Mary Kay, Tupperware, scentsy, Amway, or any other merchandise that relies on commission and pressuring the public.   So the following product reviews may be sloppy but they will be honest. I really had fun testing out these free goodies and I hope that Influenster will entrust me with more of these to try in the future.   I’m really happy with their company so far,  their website is an informational cornucopia for people looking to try new things with input from the public.  And kudos to the companies that offer out their products for free to people like me.  I hope I’m able to offer some insight that will help inspire.

First thing I took out of the box to try was the Celestial Seasonings tea.    I love tea,  and this flavor “Candy Cane Lane”  sounded perfect for Christmas.    It’s also a green tea which I’ve heard is better for you.    The sample pack came with 2 tea bags AND a coupon!    A few minutes of steeping the tea in hot water and my tea was ready for tasting.    The first thing I noticed was the smell.    Yum.   Peppermint with a hint of  herbal/sweet.   Some teas can be so strong it’s overbearing and bitter,  but this one was smooth and very pleasant.    Adding sugar or any sweetener wasn’t even necessary as it had a hint of sweetness like the smell indicated.   Overall I really liked this tea, and already used my coupon to buy a box to keep on hand (I think it’s seasonal so I wanted to make sure I got some more in time!)

Next up was the Fruit Vines.   This was a regular sized bag they sent me for a sample!   Normally licorice isn’t my thing but this particular kind I actually liked.   It tastes more like fruit than it does that weird licorice flavor. (no offense to Red Vines!)  It tastes like one of those cherry fruit roll ups you would get packed in your lunch growing up, only in handy bite sized pieces.   Right now the bag is sitting in my desk at work and one or two pieces at a time suffices for a snack to get me through the day.   Yum!    Just make sure you keep the bag sealed up well or the licorice will harden.  I use a few paperclips and it keeps it sealed up great!

Next up,  I got a hairbrush from Ecotools.  IMG_1517   Now, my hair pretty much hates the water where we currently live.    In fact, it hated the water in Germany too.   The only time I have semi normal looking hair is when I am in California.  I don’t know what it is but every morning I wake up looking like a poodle.  Poofy and annoying,  those are 2 perfect words to describe my hair.  I’ve become reliant on products in order to keep my hair semi human looking.  This brush is a ‘styler and smoother’ as stated on the package.   I’m not saying at all that this is a miracle tool but I WILL say that I noticed a difference after using it.

I’m totally going to keep using this brush and may even check out some other ecotools products.  (

Next is a tube of lipstick from NYC (New York Color) in Sugarplum.

This lipstick looks pretty nice on me 🙂  I usually don’t dress up as much as I should, but this color is one I’d include in a dress up if I ever did.   There is an event coming up sometime in January where Mike and I have been invited to a dinner party being hosted by the Garrison Commander.   Perfect excuse to dress up and be all girly for a night 😀

NYC lipstick.. don't forget to blot! ;)

Also in the box was Rimmel Scandaleyes Waterproof Kohl Kajal Eyeliner.   I purposely didn’t take a picture of me wearing this.   Reason being my eyebrows look like a Sasquatch.  I’ll just say that I already like black and grey colored eyeliners and this one is waterproof which is an added bonus!

Also got a full sized bottle of Rimmel Gentle Eye Makeup Remover

Rimmel Gentle Eye Makeup Remover

Rimmel Gentle Eye Makeup Remover

I’m sort of ashamed to admit this but I rarely use any form of makeup remover, but I tried this to see how it worked.   I always figured that it would leave a greasy film on your skin and was pleasantly surprised to see that wasn’t the case.  Plus a little of this goes a long way.   I could let this bottle stretch for a while,  which is nice.

And last but certainly not least there was a sample packet of Boots No7 Protect & Perfect Intense ADVANCED Serum.    This was the only item in the box I was really disappointed in.  I tried it and really really REALLY liked it,  but there was only a half a splash in the packet.    It stated that after a week you should be able to see results. I have awful undereye dark patches that I would love to get rid of.   Being offered not even a few day sample doesn’t really amount to anything.  Not that I’m not thankful for receiving this box,  but if they wanted their anti aging serum properly reviewed the sample should have lasted a little longer.

Well,  there’s my long winded review on the VoxBox.  I hope to be picked again to get more of these someday as it was fun doing this.   I heard the newest box was just mailed out but I didn’t get selected for that one  (Reese’s VoxBox,  that would have been a box full of YUM,  oh well!)   To whoever took the time to read this whole post,   thank you 🙂    I really appreciate it.    I will work on a Vintage Picture of the Day a little later this evening.   Thinking of calling those posts “V.P.O.T.D”     What do you think?   Catchy?
